The short film 'Frankie' winning 2008 Belindale film festival and is a monologue/ drama genre film based on the daily events of a 15 year old farther to be. This movie covers the emotions, physcolgical aspects of a 15 year old living a neglected life. Neglected both from his mother and farther therefore having no parental guide. This point could suggest the reason in which Frankie becomesa teenage farther at the tender age of 15. This movie explores visual aspects of Frankie's life, showing desolate places as main settings of this film and natural grey lighting again devloping and showing Frankie's bleak and desolate lifestyle.
The character Frankie uses explited language to explore and show the social background upbringing. Fankie uses the language to express his emotions and could sugguest concern about Frankie's copeability with his situation of becoming a teenage farther. Holding it in and putting on a front like most lads at the age, and in that community would do. It can be said that Frankie has been brought up to show no fear and to look after himself as no one else will.
Again. Frankie's mental stability is shown as unstable as throughout the short film Frankie pushes a toy doll in a pushchair around his estate, this could be seen as a socialogy exercise Frankie is using, trying to cope and get used to the having baby. However, it would be concluded that Frankie is bored, having left school, Frankie could be trying to learn the roles of farthering seeing parenting as game rather than reality.
At the end of the film we can see Frankie struggling with the problems of having a baby and not being able to hang around with his friends and so Frankei choses social over reasonability and leaves the 'baby' in the pushchair to hang with his friends. This shows the audience Frankie's immarturity to the situation. Not being able to hang around whith friends and be soically free with no problems of money or resboibility has not crossed Frankie's mind as again Frankie is only 15 and in reality should not really be dealing with those problems until older. I beleive that this movie shows awareness of teenage parenting, the concerns of not being ready to have a child, either being to young and cannot deal with the resbonibillites of having a child.
'My Beast Friend'.
Seen as a comedy 'My beast Friend' explores the comical represenation of a man representing a cat who has no clue that he is in fact being taken to a cat's home where he will be bought by another family. The short film is based in the hall way of a flat where the owner is frantically gathering unwanted items and making himself presentable before his girlfriend's arrival who is moving in with him.
The comical moment comes at the very end when the owner of the cats girlfriend walks in and instantly takes a shine to the cat resulting in the man looking awkward. The cat milks the attention and goes to say C*** before being cut off by the running credits.
Another great representation shown in this short film is the short reverse shot used when the girlfriend is petting a real cat, the shot then reverses to the man dressed as a cat then back to a real cat to which the women has now picked up. Again the shot reverses back to the man dressed as a cat. The uses of the shot is very effective shows how the different human characters visulalises the character of the cat. The owner sees the cat as a human being, an equal, hence the man in a cat suit, while the woman sees a real cat, a pet.
I would say that this short film is a comical film; the elements being the man dressed as a cat, the behaviour of the cat towards the end and basically the situation that the man has got himself into. Trying to be discreet in getting rid of the cat however failing at that as his new girlfriend takes a shine to the cat.
The Last 3 minutes directed by Pro Chan is a time line of a dying man's life man shown in a short 3 minute film. The film starts with an old man whos occuption is a janitor cleaning an empty building late at night and who then suffers from a heart attack. The man drops what is seen as a rough cut of a dimond or a piece of glass stone, but hastly picks it up. The refrence and the revelance of the stone is shown to the audience at the end of the movie, evidently the start of his life. In a way, the stone can be seen as a metaphor of the man's life, having been there for the whole of the man's life and the use of the stone to link into the next scene. This is a clever technique used by the director, using the different visual aspects of the stone for a camera technique.
From then on the camera is shown from the main character's point of view, this camera technique is quite effective as it draws the audience closer to the movie emotionally linking the character and the audience by the camera technique. All dialogue is presented directly to the audience.
This POV shot is used throughout the film as his timeline continues dating back to when the main character was born. The use of the camera shots throughout his life particulary towards the ends adds a realistic feel. An example of this would be when the character of the dad is throwing and catching the baby, evidently this baby is the camera. Again at the very end, the direcector has blurred the shot, making the shot seem murky and not very clear. Again this shot is shown through a new born babys eyes.
The short film has a reaccuring rhythm of music throughout the short film. This music is to add effect and describe the mood of the film throughout. The acoustic music is used for a soft dreamy effect, again showing the audience that this film is based on a sequence of memories.
The use of settings in this film is also quite relevent, showing him first in a dingy room drinking out of a beer bottle, to then in a posh clean hotel room and then to the sunny white sandy beach. The difference between these different settings can be seen as a visual metahpor showing how postive his life was and then suddenly how it has integrated before his own eyes.
Another aspect of his life is shown through world war 2. Earth dug up and props used to describe and visulise the danger and effectiveness of situation the man was in, again this negative impact in his life was brought by a postive aspect in his life as he proposes in a fairground. This shot can show how young the man acterually is.
The film ends with the man abrubtly dieing and the stone falling out of his hand. The film i beleive, has a grip on the audience's emtions through the POV shot used throughout. Again it enagages the audience in a physical way, instead of watcing in 2nd or 3rd person the audience would be experiening the film through the eyes of a first person. A main character. The genre of the film would be a drama and a visual monologue expressed through the audience's eyes.
